Black Embryo chair in black upholstery and chrome legs. The embryo chair was designed by Marc Newson in 1988. This chair was commissioned by the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (Powerhouse Museum.) Marc Newson was only 25 when he designed the embryo chair for the Powerhouse Exhibition 'Take a Seat'. His work had already been exhibited in Australia, Europe and Japan and a number of his designs were in commercial production both locally and abroad. The distinctive design of the embryo chair demonstrates the imaginative flair which generated Newson's precocious success. The body of the chair, made in polyurethane foam, is formed in one-piece, the back tapering to a waist before widening out into the seat. In this example the swelling contours are contained within a skin of bright red neoprene and supported on chrome tubular steel legs in an insect like stance. The elegant proportions and refinement of detail demonstrate a sophisticated aesthetic.

The black upholstery is an elastic fabric. This whole piece is in good condition except for some very light spots on the fabric of the upholstery and some little spots on the legs.

The width of the chair in the front is 82 cm in the front and 57 cm in the back of the seat
