Starck, Philippe

Born in 1949 in Paris, Philippe Starck studied at the Ecole Centrale des Arts Decoratifs. When he was 20, he ran a company producing inflatable houses. Two years later, he was the artistic director at Pierre Cardin. In the following years first interior designs, he designed Chalet du Lac nightclub and Centreville restaurant. He went on a world tour during 1977 and 1978. Upon return to Europe he started with meteoric progress: His designs for the La Main Bleue nightclub and the Les Bain Douches bar established him overnight in Paris. He was then commissioned by the President of the Republic to fashion the studies and private quarters in the Elysee. Later he took on the Cafe Costes. By this time Philippe Starck was already a global celebrity. There followed hotel interiors in New York, artistic consultancy work for Nimes city, the fitting out of TV studios, the interior design of department stores in the USA, the interior design of 5,000 hairdressing salons for L’Oréal, as well as restaurants in Tokyo, etc. Philippe Starck has never limited himself to producing blueprints for interior designs but has always also devised furniture for his interiors. A typical example is the chair for the Cafe Costes. Table and chair designs from the Philippe Starck workshop, have with time been marketed by innumerable firms: Driade, Kartell, and Alessi to mention just a few. Philippe Starck is indefatigably productive. Fascinating industrial products see the light of day: office implements, bottles, cutlery, luggage items, knives, household gadgetry, vases, carpets and toothbrushes.
