Munari, Bruno

Bruno Munari, born on October 24 1907 in Milan – died on September 30 1998 in Milan, was an Italian artist, designer and inventor. From 1925 he started to work with his uncle whom was an engineer by trade. In 1927 Munari started to follow the Italian Futurist movement, from which he disassociated himself of after the Second World War. Besides the visual and physical arts, Munari was also highly interested in literature and poetry. Together with Riccardo Castagnedi (Ricas) Munari worked as a graphic designer until 1938. During a trip to Paris he met the two French poets Louis Aragon en André Breton. From 1939 until 1945 Munari was employed as a graphic designer for the publisher Mondari. Next to this he worked as an art director for the Tempo magazine. During that same period Munari started to design books for children, which initially were meant for his son Alberto.

Together with Gillo Dorfles, Gianno Monnet and Atanasio Soldati he founded the Movimento Arte Concreta (MAC). This was the Italian derivative of the concrete art, a movement which focusses primarily on the abstraction. Between 1940 and 1950 Munari produced many products as ash trays, televisions. espresso machines and children’s toys.

His biggest impact is visible in that of the children’s books. As he started to experiment with this by adding an extra dimension, that of the tactile experience. This resulted in cut-outs, colours, movement and foldable pages.
